Evanston changes venue for New Year's Eve party
This year's New Year's Eve fireworks display will be at Evanston's Roundhouse rather than Depot Square, where it has been held since 2000.
Also, in addition to the usual youth activities in the Machine Shop, a dance for adults is planned in the Roundhouse from 10 p.m. to midnight.
Evanston's own live band, "Elevation," will perform "hits from all generations."
Admission to the adult party is free.
Meanwhile in the Machine Shop the YOU! Center will sponsor its annual carnival fundraiser, which will be $6 for youth (adults are free), and starts at 7 p.m. Games, prizes, food booths and more will be provided for the entire family.
At 10 p.m., a live DJ will entertain crowds of youth who wish to dance the New Year in.
Evanston Mayor Will Davis said the city hopes to provide the best possible family-friendly environment, he said, with two events in the same area.
Also, people will be able to wait for the fireworks inside, and just walk outside when they begin.
As in past years, there will be a ball drop, he said, also in the Roundhouse plaza.
Porters TNT Fireworks will once again donate much of the display, Davis said.
"They have been a super supporter of the community with fireworks," he said. "They do an excellent show."
Davis said the New Year's Eve dance will provide residents who have not been in the Roundhouse a chance to come and check it out. "It's their building," he said.
Another advantage will be not having to close Front Street, he said.
